An industrial visit was organized for the students of the Diploma in STEM (Skill to Enterprise Model) program to Asia’s largest Trout Fish Farm in Kokernag. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to fish farming operations and insights into entrepreneurship, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.

The visit was arranged by Prof. Parvez A. Mir, Director of CIED-IUST Foundation, specifically for the entrepreneurs of the STEM Program. The objective was to give students a firsthand experience of business operations in the fish farming industry.

Mr. Ishfaq Ahmad, an employee at Kokernag Fish Farm, interacted with the students and provided an introduction to fish farming, also known as aquaculture. He explained that fish farming involves breeding and rearing fish in controlled environments for commercial purposes. It is a lucrative business that provides a sustainable source of protein and meets the growing global demand for seafood. Mr. Ahmad shared insights on different types of fish farming, key components, economic considerations, and risk management. He also updated participants on market trends, technological advancements, and the challenges in the industry.

The students toured the fish farming chambers and observed the entire process of fish farming from start to finish. They learned that fish farming can be profitable and sustainable if managed properly. Success in this field relies on careful planning, investment in technology, effective resource management, and adherence to regulations. Understanding market trends and addressing challenges proactively can enhance the profitability and sustainability of a fish farming venture.

The visit provided students with an in-depth look at the practical aspects of fish farming operations. They explored the facilities, gaining insights into the infrastructure, machinery, and labor dynamics. Observing the workings of fish farming units helped them understand the complexities involved in managing such businesses. This kind of hands-on learning is essential for grasping how businesses operate in real-world settings and is particularly valuable for students interested in entrepreneurship and innovation.
